PBA lacrosse reloads for second SELC season; will host UMiami, SCAD, etc
WEST PALM BEACH, FL – The Palm Beach Atlantic University lacrosse program, which enters its' second year in the Southeast Lacrosse Conference, announced its 2009 schedule Wednesday.
Head coach Chris Southard, which enters his sixth year at the helm of the Sailfish this spring, will lead PBA into a 14-game schedule including five games against competitive SELC-South Region teams.
Palm Beach Atlantic will open the 2009 season with a round-robin tournament at Mercer University in Macon, GA. On Saturday, January 31st, PBA will begin against Southern Virginia University at 12:30pm. Later that afternoon, the Sailfish will battle the University of Alabama at 5:30pm. On February 1st, PBA will wrap-up the weekend against Mercer University (gametime, 12:30pm).
In potentially the biggest home lacrosse game in school history, the University of Miami will travel to West Palm Beach for the Sailfish lacrosse home opener. PBA/UM will be played "under the lights" at 8:00pm on February 5th.
Two days later, the 'Fish will be on the road again as they head to Jacksonville for a weekend of games. PBA faces a doubleheader on Saturday, with conference opponent Georgia Southern beginning the festivities at 12pm. Last season, the Sailfish defeated the Eagles 17-7. In the second part of the doubleheader, PBA will meet the College of Charleston (gametime, 4pm). The Cougars are not members of the SELC, but are seeking membership in the future. Palm Beach Atlantic finishes the weekend with a Sunday game against Jacksonville University at 2pm.
PBA will finish the season with seven straight home games:
February 22, 7pm vs Coastal Carolina University;
March 1, 7pm vs Eckerd College;
March 3, 7pm vs Georgia State University;
March 6, 7pm vs Savannah College of Art & Design;
April 4, 3pm vs University of South Florida;
April 11, 3pm vs University of North Florida;
April 18, 5pm vs Jacksonville University.
With the exception of the neutral-site game against Georgia Southern, Palm Beach Atlantic has the luxury of hosting all scheduled SELC division games. Also, first year SELC member Georgia State will travel to West Palm Beach for an unusual Tuesday night game. USF and Jacksonville University will travel south for the second half of their home-and-home series with PBA.
The Sailfish finished the 2008 season with a overall record of 4-6.
