PBA overcame a slow start to defeat Alabama, 14-11.

MACON, GA –– The Palm Beach Atlantic lacrosse team began the 2009 season with three key early-season victories this past weekend in Macon, GA. On the site of Mercer University, the Sailfish competed in a four team round-robin tournament with the University of Alabama, Southern Virginia University and the host Mercer.

PBA overcame a slow start in their first game to defeat Alabama, 14-11. In what was a very streaky game, both teams made two separate runs giving their teams the lead. Alabama took charge first, scoring five first quarter goals, including four unanswered. Goals by Jayson Schmidt (Brighton, MI/Howell) and Lance Villio (Charlottesville, VA/The Covenant School) left the 'Fish trailing 5-2 after one period. Alabama would then score twice to take a 7-2 lead early in the second quarter.

Another goal by both Villio and Schmidt, in addition to a goal by Andrew Lockhart (Winter Park, FL/Winter Park) would cut the halftime lead to 7-5. Four more early third quarter goals (Villio- 2, Lockhart and Jones) would later vault PBA into a 9-7 lead. Following an Alabama man-up goal, a pass from Kyle Mains (Stow, OH/CVCA) to Schmidt would send the Sailfish into the fourth quarter leading 10-8.

Three Crimson Tide goals in a 1:30 span gave Alabama an 11-10 lead at 12:55 of the fourth quarter. It would be over seven minutes before someone would score again, with Andrew Lockhart dodging unassisted to tie the game. Villio would also score unassisted, while goals from Schmidt and Lockhart would put the game out of reach.

The Sailfish were led by their attack in the win over Alabama–– Lance Villio had five goals and two assists, Andrew Lockhart had four goals and one assist and Jayson Schmidt had four goals. The lone midfield goal was scored by Jordan Jones (North Myrtle Beach, SC/The Academy of the Arts). Alabama was paced by attackman Evan Thompson with four goals. Alabama fell to 1-1 overall (they defeated Southern Virginia on Friday), while PBA earned their first win of the season (1-0). Much credit has to be given to the Palm Beach Atlantic defense, who used a mix of zone and man-to-man looks to confuse the 'Bama front. In addition, the midfield cleared the ball with much success in the victory.

In a coaches' decision to forgo the 6PM start-time in favor of an earlier matchup, PBA battled Southern Virginia University following 45 minutes' rest. While never completely putting the game out of reach, the first team offense scored confidently and at will, leading to substitutions early in the second quarter. Villio lead the team (once again) with six points in limited time (3 goals, 3 assists). Attackmen Trae Brant (Crystal River, FL/Seven Rivers) and Jayson Schmidt were the other multiple-goal scorers (with two apiece)–– Junior Andrew Lockhart had one goal and four assists.

On Sunday, the Sailfish overcame the 10AM gametime to score often and early against Mercer University. Despite only scoring six total 1st quarter goals against Alabama and SVU, the 'Fish ripped the cage for nine unanswered goals en route to a 10-1 first quarter lead. PBA would eventually mix in all of the reserves in an 18-4 win that was never a close as the score indicates. Goalie Fritz Van der Grift (Palm Beach, FL/Elizabethtown College) only faced eight shots, thanks in part to a great defense led by senior captain Jay Shewan (Indianapolis, IN/Heritage Christian).

Villio again led the troops with four points, while Andrew Lockhart score three goals and freshman Joel Horras (Oak Park, IL/Oak Park & River Forest) contributed with three, himself. Jayson Schmidt scored two, as did freshman Jesse Vanatta (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) who had three points total. Six other Sailfish scored goals, including defenseman Jay Shewan.

Palm Beach Atlantic improves to 3-0 overall after the weekend sweep. Following a late-night return to West Palm Beach, the 'Fish will recharge before traveling to Coral Gables, FL for a showdown with the University of Miami. Last season, the Hurricanes defeated PBA 13-2.
