EAGLES CAGED: PBA rolls past Florida Gulf Coast University, 18-8.

PBA in earlier action against UMiami.

WEST PALM BEACH, FL –– In a series of unlikely events, PBA finally played in its' home opener. The Sailfish, ranked #23 in MCLA-II, had seen their home opening games cancelled three times prior (fortunately, the brand new program at FGCU offered to help). As a result, Florida Gulf Coast replaced Eckerd College on the schedule, but were sent home with a likely similar result–– an 18-8 blowout, courtesy of the Sailfish.

The dominating play started right from the first whistle, when senior Lance Villio (Charlottesville, VA/The Covenant School) won the opening faceoff. Villio won, raced downfield and hit junior attackman Jayson Schmidt (Brighton, MI/Howell) for a score just six seconds into the game. Despite two more goals by junior Andrew Lockhart (Winter Park, FL/Winter Park), the Sailfish would relent, leading 3-2 after one period.

In the second, PBA outscored the Eagles 8-1. Leading the way was freshman Joel Horras (Oak Park, IL/Oak Park & River Forest), who scored three goals and one assist in the quarter. FGCU would actually outscore PBA in the third quarter (3-2), but a 5-2 4th quarter for the Sailfish would give them the win for keeps.

Villio had his highest scoring game for Palm Beach Atlantic this season, notching four goals and four assists. Horras would add one more goal to finish with four goals and one assist, while Lockhart finished with the same total. Schmidt would finish with one goal and one assist.

At the midfield, senior middie Jordan Jones (North Myrtle Beach, FL/The Academy of the Arts) took charge with two goals and one assist. Junior midfielder Kyle Phelps (Corfu, NY/Pembroke) also had two goals/one assist. Other scorers were Ethan Palmquist (one goal), Michael Kaiser (one assist), and Kyle Mains (one assist).

#23 Palm Beach Atlantic improves to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play. PBA will host Georgia State University this Tuesday night, March 3rd, 7pm.
