WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. –– Palm Beach Atlantic needed to do one of two things on Friday afternoon in order to advance to the SELC Conference Tournament–– 1) defeat CCU and hold them under 7 goals, or, 2) defeat CCU by three goals. The Sailfish did not meet this criteria, meaning they will be in West Palm Beach while the league playoffs occur next weekend, but they did make a statement in their 12-11 victory over Coastal Carolina.
Determined to better their output from last season (a 15-6 loss to CCU in Savannah, GA), Palm Beach Atlantic came out with a fiery start and shut out the Chanticleers in the first quarter. Leading the way was senior defenseman Jay Shewan (Indianapolis, Ind./Heritage Christian) and junior goalkeeper Fritz Van der Grift (Palm Beach, Fla./Deerfield Acad.-Elizabethtown College). Van der Grift was a perfect 6-for-6 in the first, and recorded 26 saves for the game. With 10:34 remaining in the first quarter, junior attackman Andrew Lockhart (Winter Park, Fla./Winter Park) scored to give PBA a 1-0 lead.
The Sailfish started the second quarter man-up due to the use an illiegal equipment penalty on #33 A.J. Seborowski. PBA only needed 13 seconds to cash-in, as freshman Chris Bode (Cincinnati, OH/Indian River) placed a bounce shot over the shoulder of CCU goalie John Russo. 2-0 Sailfish.
Coastal sophomore Kyle Barry scored his first goal of the season to cut the defecit to 2-1, but Palm Beach Atlantic would answer right back with goals from freshmen Joel Horras (Oak Park, IL/Oak Park & River Forest) and Jesse Vanatta (Springfield, VA/West Springfield).
Fortunately, the Sailfish rallied and scored three goals late (including a tricky goal by Horras with :04 remaining) and PBA took a 7-3 lead to halftime. Four unanswered goals by CCU tied the game in the third quarter, but Horras scored his third of the game to put the Sailfish up after three.
Coming right back, two early goals by Coastal Carolina gave the Chanticleers a 9-8 lead. Senior midfielder Jordan Jones (North Myrtle Beach, SC/The Academy for the Arts) scored his first of the game at 6:02 to tie the game and force the dramatics. Horras tallied his fifth point of the game with a great dodge from "X" and then followed that up with a pass to junior Jayson Schmidt (Brighton, Mich./Howell) who turned and fired for a two goal Sailfish lead (1:07 remaining). Refusing to quit, Coastal senior Matt Massey scored two goals in the final minute (:56 and :22) to even the scoring at 11-11.
As time ticked down, PBA midfielder Jordan Jones saw the ball in his stick again. With only five seconds remaining, Jones dodged, shot, and scored to give Palm Beach Atlantic the thrilling 12-11 win.
Palm Beach Atlantic improves to 8-3 on the year and 4-1 in conference play, while Coastal Carolina falls to 4-2 (3-1). The Sailfish have seen their season ended by way of a goal differential tiebreaker, but will eagerly await end-of-season activities (including the annual alumni game). PBA will have much to look forward to next season as they welcome in several new recruits and get ready to challenge again for an SELC title.
NOTES
-Palm Beach Atlantic was 2/6 (33%) in extra-man opportunities. Coastal Carolina University was 1/4 (25%).

-Senior midfielder Jordan Jones led all players with 9 faceoff victories.
-The all-time series is tied 1-1. CCU won their only other meeting, 15-6 (2008).
