FORT MYERS, Fla. –– On Saturday afternoon, Palm Beach Atlantic used a stellar defensive effort to thwart the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles, 11-9. Despite being outshot, the Sailfish defense held strong throughout the entire game.
On the offensive end, freshman Trey Darby (Wilmington, NC/Palm Beach Gardens) scored four goals in his collegiate lacrosse debut, while senior Andrew Lockhart (Winter Park, FL/Winter Park) added two goals and three assists. Other multi-point scorers were Jayson Schmidt (Brighton, MI/Howell) and Jesse Vanatta (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) with two goals apiece and senior Kyle Phelps (one goal, one assist).
Defensively, senior goalie Fritz Van der Grift (Palm Beach, FL/Elizabethtown College) played a game to be remembered, stopping 29 shots, including several on the doorstep. Palm Beach Atlantic battled FGCU's man-up unit for large portions of the game, including a harrowing 6-on-3 defensive stand in the third quarter.
The Sailfish improve to (0-0, 1-0) on the year, and will host the University of Miami (1-1, 0-1) on Friday, February 12, 2010, 7:00pm.
